What is it? |
|
Autism is a rare mental illness that appears during the first three years of a child’s life. It affects more boys than girls; autistic children often give the impression of being deaf or mute. However, they are not physically handicapped, though they are usually retarded.
Temper tantrums are often their only sign of emotion. The autistic child prefers simple, repetitive games, toys and mechanical objects. A few autistic children display exceptional ability at tasks such as computing numbers, working out dates or memorising piece of music at first hearing.

Before the early 1940’s autistic children were often thought of as ‘backward’ or ‘difficult’. There need to be close co-operation between parents and doctor to achieve the best result.
Autistic children need specialist care and special schooling. There is no know cure, children may be treated with psychotherapy, or calming drugs. Doctors may also consider alternative therapies using music.
